Action to save Wedgwood collections

The Business Archives Council is one of a number of relevant bodies supporting the appeal to save the Wedgwood collection, which includes the company's archives. This follows a ruling by the High Court that the Wedgwood Museums collection can be sold off to help plug the company's pension deficit.

Terry Gourvish, Chairman of the BAC, has written to Arts Council England, The National Archives, The Museums Association, The Archives and Records Association and members of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Archives and History, among others, to stress the Council's concerns and to offer the Council's assistance.

In addition to raising the BAC's concerns about the Wedgwood collection itself, Terry Gourvish has also drawn attention to the fact that this case highlights the lack of protection for important business archive collections and sets a dangerous precedent of seeing such items purely in terms of their financial value.
