Between September 2011 and March 2013 The National Archives, in partnership with the Business Archives Council, conducted a survey of the surviving records of the architectural, building and construction sectors. These sectors had been identified as being poorly documented in terms of their archives and survey work was carried out by the Resource Discovery Officer, Annabel Welsh. The results of the survey were fed, where practicable, into the National Register of Archives. A steering committee of experts and representatives of interested bodies met during the period to consider broader issues and to provide advice and expertise. Access to the report, on The National Archives website, can be obtained using the link beneath.

Read moreCrisis Management Team case study
Since 2009, as part of the National Strategy for Business Archives, a group of seven business archivists and historians has monitored corporate administrations, liquidations and takeovers where records were thought to be at risk. In the period since, there have been roughly fifty cases where the team has taken action.
One of the most high-profile was the case of the electrical retailer Comet, which went into administration in November 2012. A swift and co-ordinated response by the team, aided by Hull City Archives and an employee within the company itself, helped to ensure that records of this significant company were safely secured and deposited. Hull City Archives has published an item on its website which gives more details about the company and the content of the collection. To read it, follow the link below.

In support of the National Strategy for Business Archives, the Business Archives Council (BAC) is delighted to announce that it is once again offering a cataloguing grant for business collections.
We envisage that the £2000 grant will be used over the equivalent of a 4-week period to fund an archive intern or temporary staff member (under professional supervision) to catalogue a discrete collection of business records. This can either be a detailed catalogue of a small collection or a top-level catalogue of a more substantial collection. Grant recipients should provide the BAC with an article for its newsletter, and the catalogue should be made available to the National Register of Archives (published by The National Archives).
